Grow food for the bees (wildflowers!) with this fun spring gardening activity. It’s a great way to teach kids about flowers, gardening and bees; and, it’s also a great environmentally friendly way to plant seeds with zero waste!

Seeds are planted in eggshells to make cute little egg people, but can also be planted right into a planter or garden once the seeds sprout. The eggshells are full of calcium which leaches into the ground after they are planted, to help your plants grow.

See the directions below for this fun spring activity.

Ingredients

Empty Egg shells, washed and dried
Permanent Marker
1 package Wildflower Seeds
Potting soil
Empty Egg carton

Instructions

  1. Save cracked eggshells (try to crack them so you have 1/2 to 3/4 of the shell to put dirt into) and rinse them under hot water. Allow to dry.
  2. Poke a hole in the bottow of each egg shell to allow drainage. It’s easiest to push from inside the egg with a sharp pen tip or knife. Remove the chipped piece of shell with your finger.
  3. Using a permanent marker, draw little faces on your eggs shells.
  4. Lightly moisten the potting soil and fill your egg shells about 1/2 full.
  5. Sprinkle the seeds on top of each egg and then cover with a little bit more soil.
  6. Water each egg every day so the soil remains damp and watch for your seeds to grow. Ours took about 6 days to start sprouting.
  7. Plant your eggs in a garden or planter outside in full sun when the weather allows.
  8. Thanks for helping to feed the bees!
